General term referring to faster-than-telephone-modem connections, i.e. receiving (download) much faster than 56 kb/s and transmitting (upload) faster than 28 kb/s. Typically this is used to connect to the Internet via DSL or ADSL over the original copper telephone lines. Cable can offer higher data rates.
